Welcome To Hartwell
From time to time we welcome friends to our homes and often rekindle fond memories of the positive episodes of our lives. I want to welcome each of you to our community and our home. We are diligently pursuing our dreams to make Hartwell a better place for all of those who live here.
Hartwell is known as the "Best Town by a Dam Site" due to its close proximity to Lake Hartwell and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' hydrolectric power-generating dam. As the county seat, Hartwell is the largest city in rural Hart County.
The Cherokee Indians determined that the "Center of the World" is located at the southern fringes of the city. Considering it a sacred place and a trade center, generations of native inhabitants would travel from near and far to come to this area.
Hartwell continues to serve as a place where residents and visitors are greeted with friendliness and hospitality. Hartwell is nestled amongst the rolling foothills of the Piedmont. Lake Hartwell is one of the southeast's largest and most visited recreational lakes. Recreation is plentiful. There is golf, camping, swimming, boating, hiking, and fishing.
Perhaps you will find the many festivals and community events scheduled throughout the year as a way to relax. Every year, thousands of visitors descend on Hartwell for annual events such as the Antique Boat Show, the Pre-Fourth Extravaganza, Dancin' on Depot, or Arts in hARTwell.
During the season, if you are looking for some good homegrown fruits and vegetables, be sure to come by the Farmers' Market. Not only will you find quality produce, you will find new friends.
Our downtown is being renovated to attract visitors, shoppers, and just good folks like you that enjoy small towns. Downtown Hartwell offers you a balance of specialty shops, dining opportunities and entertainment. On Depot Street, be sure to check out the Bluegrass Express and the Community Theatre.
After a week of work or leisure, you will find a number of churches that will open their doors and invite you to worship. While Hartwell is home to a number of denominations, there are many ecumenical services that invite the community to worship together.
It has been my honor and pleasure to welcome you and share with you a small glimpse of our town. On behalf of the wonderful citizens, the City Council, and all of our employees of Hartwell, please feel free to let us know if there is anything we can do to make you feel more at home.
Sincerely,
Matt Beasley
Mayor City of Hartwell
